Chocolate toothpaste: a childhood favourite that unites Bedfordshire
The beloved chocolate tart is so popular in Bedford that it had a petition to make it a “Bedford thing”. The petition was started by All Things, Beds, Herts and Bucks in 2018 and got 350 supporters. One of the supporters, Judith Bedford aptly summed up reason for this petition by commenting, “I lived in Bedford most of my live and believe chocolate toothpaste all started in the school I went to. This is something you could not get any other part of the UK”. This nostalgia is one of the reasons that unites Bedfordians as they look to claim this sweet treat their own!
This school pudding was popular among locals who remember the dessert as a canteen delicacy. Even Nadiya Hussain has a recipe for this local pudding, she describes it as a “delicious, gooey chocolate tart”. The tart is made with margarine, sugar, cocoa, powder milk and water. Other recipes add hot chocolate powder and switch the margarine with butter to give it a richer texture. One of the perks of this recipe is that it doesn’t need an oven, so children can help out and make it a fun activity for the entire family.
Nowadays there are a selected number of bakeries who still do the dessert like Amalfi Pasticceria, La Rondine, Helen’s Homemade Bakery, Gunns Bakery and even at the Cottage Bakery at Ampthill.
